When persistent foot or ankle pain refuses to improve, the real cause is often hidden deep inside soft tissue, cartilage, or bone, where standard X-rays cannot reach. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) gives your podiatrist a clear, detailed look at exactly what is happening beneath the surface, so the right treatment plan can begin without guesswork.
At Sweeney Foot & Ankle Specialists, Dr. D. Sean Sweeney, DPM, FACFAS, and Dr. Christy Leahey, DPM, FACFAS, use advanced diagnostic imaging to pinpoint complex conditions with precision. Voted Best Podiatrist in The Woodlands by Living Magazine every year since 2012, our team combines compassionate care with leading-edge technology for patients of all ages.
What Is an MRI?
MRI is one of the most powerful tools in modern medicine for evaluating the foot and ankle. Unlike CT scans, it does not use radiation. Instead, it combines a strong magnet with radio waves, and a computer translates the signals from your body into detailed cross-sectional images of soft tissues and bones.
For foot and ankle care, MRI provides information that other tests simply cannot, helping your doctor build a treatment plan around an accurate diagnosis.
Conditions an MRI Can Diagnose
Your provider may order an MRI as part of a broader diagnostic evaluation to identify:
- Tendon and ligament injuries
- Cartilage damage and arthritis
- Fractures, non-unions, and delayed bone healing
- Soft tissue and bone tumors
- Infection and avascular necrosis
What to Expect During Your Scan
You will lie on a comfortable table while your leg is positioned inside a large tube-shaped scanner. Most of your body remains outside the machine. The scanner is well-lit, has gentle airflow, and typically offers music to help you relax.
You will hear loud knocking sounds while images are captured, so staying very still is important for clear results. A technologist communicates with you through an intercom the entire time. A full foot and ankle MRI usually takes about 1 to 2 hours.
How to Prepare
Most patients need little preparation. Eat and drink normally, but limit caffeine to stay relaxed. Remove watches, jewelry, coins, credit cards, and electronics before entering the scan room. Tell our team in advance if you have:
- A pacemaker, defibrillator, or implanted pump
- Surgical or aneurysm clips
- Cochlear implants or metal fragments in the eyes
- Concerns about claustrophobia
- A current or possible pregnancy
Dental work, joint replacements, and many surgical clips are typically safe. Some scans use a small contrast injection to improve accuracy, and our team will review any allergies with you first.
Understanding Your Results
A radiologist reviews your images and sends a detailed report to your podiatrist, usually within a few days. From there, Dr. Sweeney and Dr. Leahey explain your findings in plain language and walk you through the next steps, whether that is conservative care, in-office physical therapy, or surgical treatment.
