What Is EMG/NCV Testing?
EMG/NCV is a two-part diagnostic study that evaluates the health of the nerves and muscles throughout your lower extremity. It is one of several tools used in our broader diagnostic services to determine why a foot, ankle, or leg is not functioning as it should.
- Electromyography (EMG): Records the electrical activity in your muscles using a fine needle electrode placed in specific muscle bellies. Activity is measured at rest and during contraction.
- Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV): Measures how quickly an electrical impulse travels along a peripheral nerve, using small surface electrodes and a mild stimulator.

What to Expect During the Test

During the EMG, a thin electrode is briefly inserted into select muscles to record electrical signals, which are displayed as audio and on a screen. For the NCV portion, electrodes are taped to your skin while a small stimulator delivers a mild electrical pulse. You may feel a brief tingle or muscle twitch, but the shock is not harmful. The number of muscles and nerves tested depends on your symptoms.
How to Prepare
- Eat normally and take medications as usual.
- Notify the testing facility if you take blood thinners.
- Shower the morning of the exam and skip lotions, oils, or emollients.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Mild tenderness in the tested muscles for a few hours afterward is normal. Once results are in, your physician will walk you through the findings and recommend the next steps.
