Surgical Excision of the Ganglion in The Woodlands, TX

That soft, stubborn lump on your foot or ankle isn’t just unsightly — it can ache, press against your shoes, and limit how comfortably you move. When splinting, aspiration, or activity changes haven’t given a ganglion cyst the boot, surgical excision offers a definitive solution that removes the mass at its source.

At Sweeney Foot & Ankle Specialists, Dr. D. Sean Sweeney, DPM, FACFAS, and Dr. Christy Leahey, DPM, FACFAS, bring more than 20 years of trusted foot and ankle expertise to every patient. Recognized as Best Podiatrist in The Woodlands by Living Magazine every year since 2012, our team blends advanced surgical skill with compassionate, patient-centered care.

What Is Surgical Excision of a Ganglion?

A ganglion is a fluid-filled mass that grows from a joint capsule or tendon sheath, often appearing on the top of the foot or around the ankle. Surgical excision is considered the definitive treatment because it removes both the cyst and its connecting “tail,” significantly reducing the chance of regrowth.

The procedure can be performed under local, intravenous, or general anesthesia, typically in an outpatient surgery center. In select cases, your surgeon may perform it in the office.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may benefit from ganglion excision if:

  • The cyst causes pain, pressure, or irritation in footwear
  • It interferes with walking, sports, or work
  • Conservative treatments have failed
  • The mass is growing or recurring

What to Expect During the Procedure

After anesthesia, your surgeon makes a small incision centered over the mass, carefully protecting nearby skin nerves. The ganglion is dissected from surrounding tissue, and its tail is traced back to the joint or tendon sheath. The exit point is then closed with suture or electrocautery to seal the source. A compressive gauze dressing is applied, and a splint or below-the-knee cast may be used for added protection.

Recovery Period

Healing time depends on the cyst’s location and the dissection required. Most patients can expect:

  • Crutches or a cast for several days up to three weeks
  • Foot elevation above the heart for the first 7–10 days
  • First follow-up visit within 3 to 7 days
  • Sutures removed 10–14 days post-op
  • Return to loose-fitting shoes within about two weeks
  • Limited activity for 3–4 weeks; sports or exercise for around 6 weeks

Time off work varies based on job demands and footwear requirements. Keeping the foot clean, dry, and elevated is essential to avoid swelling, infection, and recurrence.

Possible Complications

Ganglion excision is generally safe, but every surgery carries some risk. Possible complications include infection, delayed healing from excessive swelling, damage to small skin nerves, or recurrence. Occasionally, a small nerve invested in the cyst must be sacrificed, which can leave a minor area of numbness on the top of the foot.
